2021 Mazda CX-5 — $500 WrenchSpec

16 tools | $485 estimated spend | Beginner skill level | Generated 2026-03-18

Build Summary

Your 2021 CX-5 is one of the best-built crossovers on the road — the Skyactiv-G 2.5L is chain-driven, metric-only, and built to last with proper care. At $500 you get a complete safety-first setup covering oil changes, brake pads, and warning light diagnosis. One non-negotiable heads-up before you touch anything: those rear disc calipers have pistons that screw in rather than push in, and a C-clamp will destroy them. Rent the wind-back tool. It's free.

2021 Mazda CX-5 — PE-VPTS Skyactiv-G 2.5L I4 (187hp NA, base/Sport/Touring/GT) or PY-VPTS Skyactiv-G 2.5T I4 Turbo (227hp, Grand Touring Reserve/Signature trims)

Timing chain — not a belt — so no service interval panic. Fully metric fasteners across the board. Cartridge-style oil filter uses a plastic housing cap that requires a 65mm cap wrench; crack that housing with pliers and you're replacing the whole assembly for $60.

TIER 1 Safety-Critical & Essentials (12 tools)

Pittsburgh 3-Ton Low-Profile Steel Floor Jack — $65

Brand: Pittsburgh (Harbor Freight) | Category: Lifting | Store: Harbor Freight | Priority: CRITICAL

The CX-5 sits at 8.5 inches of ground clearance stock — you don't need a racing-low jack, but the Pittsburgh low-profile gives you a comfortable 3.5-inch minimum and a dead-simple saddle height for the factory pinch weld jack points. It's heavy at 68 lbs, but it's bulletproof cast steel and with a 20% Harbor Freight coupon it drops to $52. When budget allows, the Arcan ALJ3T is the lifetime upgrade — lighter aluminum, faster pump, same capacity — but this gets you safely under the car today.

Alternative: Upgrade: Arcan ALJ3T 3-ton aluminum low-profile jack at ~$145 on Amazon. Lighter, faster-pumping, buy-once quality. Worth the step up when budget allows.

ICON 6-Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands (Pair) — $42

Brand: ICON (Harbor Freight) | Category: Lifting | Store: Harbor Freight | Priority: CRITICAL

Six tons of rated capacity for a 4,000 lb crossover is deliberate overkill — that margin is your safety buffer against an imperfect placement or an accidental bump. Wide base, positive ratchet-tooth lock, and these are post-2020 manufacture so they're clean of the 2020 recall issue. Place them under the frame rails, not the pinch welds, and never crawl under a car supported only by a floor jack. These stands are non-negotiable.

Maxxhaul 70472 Solid Rubber Wheel Chocks (2-Pack) — $16

Brand: Maxxhaul | Category: Safety | Store: Amazon | Priority: CRITICAL

Before the floor jack goes under anything, chock the wheels on the opposite end. This is not optional — a rolling car on jack stands is a fatality event. Solid rubber construction, no hollow plastic that collapses under load. These stay in the garage permanently, not the trunk.

Alternative: Any solid rubber chocks from AutoZone work. Avoid hollow plastic ones.

Uvex S1933X Astrospec Safety Glasses — $5

Brand: Uvex | Category: Safety | Store: Amazon | Priority: CRITICAL

Rust scale, brake dust, splash-back from oil drains, penetrating spray blowback — working under a car puts material in your face constantly. Five dollars. No excuse.

First Alert HOME1 2.5 lb ABC Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher — $26

Brand: First Alert | Category: Safety | Store: Home Depot | Priority: CRITICAL

Fuel drips on hot exhaust, shop rags soaked with brake cleaner near an ignition source, electrical shorts from battery work — garage fires start faster than you think. Mount this within arm's reach of where you work. If your garage doesn't have one today, buy this before you buy any other tool on this list.

GearWrench 80550P 80-Piece 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" Drive SAE/Metric Socket Set — $70

Brand: GearWrench | Category: Sockets | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

Your CX-5 is metric-only but getting all three drive sizes in one set is the right move for a beginner — 1/4" for interior panels and delicate fasteners, 3/8" for most engine bay work, 1/2" for suspension and wheel work. The 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, and 21mm sockets will handle the vast majority of every job on this car. These are 6-point sockets only, which is the correct choice — 12-point sockets are for professional use on pristine fasteners. On a real car with rust and torque, 6-point is the difference between removing a bolt and rounding it.

Alternative: Tekton metric-only socket sets purchased separately if you want to stay purely metric and save $10-15. Less versatile overall.

Tekton 1/2" Drive x 18" Breaker Bar — $25

Brand: Tekton | Category: Hand Tools | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

The drain plug and lug nuts on a factory-tightened CX-5 will not budge with a ratchet. This bar does. Eighteen inches of leverage converts your body weight into fastener-breaking torque without straining your ratchet mechanism. Slip a pipe over the handle if you need more reach — this is solid chrome-vanadium and it'll take it. Critical rule: use the breaker bar to break loose, use the ratchet to spin out, use the torque wrench to reinstall. Never use the torque wrench to break things loose — you'll destroy the internals.

Tekton 24335 1/2" Drive Click Torque Wrench (10-150 ft-lbs) — $38

Brand: Tekton | Category: Hand Tools | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

CX-5 lug nuts: 88 ft-lbs. Front caliper bracket bolts: 80 ft-lbs. Rear caliper bracket: 66 ft-lbs. Drain plug: 29 ft-lbs. None of these are guesses — overtighten the caliper bracket and you distort the mounting face; undertighten lug nuts and you'll be chasing a pulsating pedal from warped rotors within 500 miles. The Tekton is ±4% accurate and has a crisp click that's impossible to confuse with the ratchet noise. Store it at minimum torque setting between jobs or you'll relax the spring and lose calibration.

Alternative: Pittsburgh torque wrench at HF is $30 and works fine out of the box. Loses calibration faster with frequent use. Fine as a starter if budget is the constraint.

Wera 05347003001 Kraftform Plus Series 900 7-Piece Screwdriver Set — $38

Brand: Wera | Category: Hand Tools | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

Air filter housing tabs, battery terminal clamps, engine cover clips, interior trim screws — every job on this car starts or ends with a screwdriver. Wera's Kraftform handles have a multi-zone grip geometry that transfers more wrist torque than anything in a Craftsman set, and the laser-engraved tip faces mechanically grip the screw head rather than relying purely on friction. The slotted and Phillips tips in this set cover 95% of what you'll encounter. Don't soak the handles in brake fluid or they'll swell.

Alternative: Husky 10-pc screwdriver set at Home Depot for ~$22. Adequate but the handle geometry is generic and they cam out on stubborn screws.

Knipex 87-01-180 7-Inch Cobra Adjustable Pliers — $30

Brand: Knipex | Category: Hand Tools | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

These are the greatest automotive pliers ever made. One-handed push-button width adjustment, zero-slip serrated jaws, and a grip that makes Channellocks feel like they're from a dollar store. You'll use these on radiator hose spring clamps, coolant line pinch clips, oil cooler line fittings, and anything round that needs to be turned or held. The 7-inch size is the engine-bay sweet spot — large enough for serious bite, compact enough to get into tight clearances. If you only buy one non-safety hand tool off this list, make it these.

Alternative: Channellock 430 at ~$20. Gets the job done but requires two hands to adjust and slips more on smooth surfaces.

Knipex 26-11-180 7-Inch Long Nose Pliers — $22

Brand: Knipex | Category: Hand Tools | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

The Cobra can't reach into tight corners or grab cotter pins, small E-clips, or wiring harness clips buried behind brackets. You need a quality long-nose for these jobs. Knipex quality in a smaller package — the induction-hardened cutting edge handles wire if needed and the serrated jaws grip without slipping. This is a tool you'll reach for on every single job.

Launch CRP123X OBD2 Code Scanner — $65

Brand: Launch | Category: Diagnostic | Store: Amazon | Priority: HIGH

A basic $30 code reader gives you engine codes. The Launch CRP123X gives you engine, ABS, SRS (airbag), and transmission codes with live sensor data — the four systems that actually matter on a modern crossover. When your CX-5 throws an ABS warning, a basic scanner tells you nothing. This scanner tells you which wheel speed sensor, what the actual voltage reading is, and whether it's intermittent. Live data mode is invaluable for diagnosing misfires or sensor drift. For $65 this is the smartest investment after the safety gear.

Alternative: Budget alt: Innova 3100j at ~$30 covers engine codes and live engine data only. Blind to ABS, SRS, and transmission. Fine for check-engine-only use.

TIER 3 Vehicle-Specific (4 tools)

Lisle 65mm 14-Flute Oil Filter Housing Cap Wrench — $15

Brand: Lisle | Category: Mazda Specialty | Store: Amazon | Priority: CRITICAL

The Skyactiv-G 2.5L uses a plastic cartridge filter housing cap — 65mm diameter, 14 internal flutes. This is the only correct tool. Pliers will crack the cap on the first overtightened removal attempt. The housing itself is integrated into the engine block on some configurations, which makes a cracked cap a very bad day. $15 now, or $60-80 later. This goes in your socket drawer permanently.

Alternative: EWK 65mm oil filter housing cap wrench on Amazon is a common alternative at a similar price. Same function.

PB Blaster 11 oz Penetrating Catalyst Spray — $10

Brand: PB Blaster | Category: Shop Supplies | Store: AutoZone / Amazon | Priority: HIGH

Drain plug, brake caliper bolts, wheel lug seat threads — even on a 2021 vehicle, road salt and heat cycling create corrosion at fastener threads. Spray it and wait 20 minutes before you reach for a wrench. PB Blaster's ester-based chemistry actually penetrates rust by capillary action. WD-40 is a water displacer and does not do this. Keep them separate in your head.

SE 8-Inch Round Magnetic Parts Tray — $10

Brand: SE | Category: Shop Supplies | Store: Amazon | Priority: RECOMMENDED

You will drop a bolt. It will roll under the car, behind the wheel well, into the drain in your garage floor. The fix: every fastener you remove goes directly into this tray, immediately, without exception. Doesn't matter how short the job is. One missing caliper bolt costs you far more than $10 to recover.

Permatex 80208 Anti-Seize Lubricant (1 oz Brush-Top) — $8

Brand: Permatex | Category: Shop Supplies | Store: AutoZone / Amazon | Priority: RECOMMENDED

A thin coat on your drain plug threads and spark plug threads before reinstallation prevents galling and makes the next service dramatically easier. Do not apply to oil filter threads — those get a fresh thin coat of clean motor oil only. Anti-seize on the oil filter cap threads will cause overtightening and make the cap nearly impossible to remove later. Thin film only, not a heavy coat.
